Youth and Teen Program

The Youth and Teen Program at THE SPACE is an aerial and circus arts program. Students starting at age 4 may join youth classes in their age range. Classes meet weekly for a full season that coincides with the Cobb County school schedule and culminates in a student showcase near the end of the season. Students work on aerial skills on silks, trapeze, and lyra (after age 10) as well as circus arts such as juggling, hooping, and basic tumbling and acrobatics.

Aerial | Circus (4-6 yrs) - Tuesdays | 4:00-  5:00 pm

Starting at age 4 your child can begin learning aerial arts!  In this hour long class kids will begin to learn balance and coordination by working circus arts on the ground and in the air.  Students begin each class with a fun cardio based warm up followed by learning stretches with their instructor.  They will learn basic tumbling like front rolls and donkey kicks that will later lead to handstands and walk overs when they are older.  Students also work on coordination and critical thinking by practicing prop manipulation such as balancing and juggling with scarves.  The aerial skills in this class focus on low trapeze and low sling (silks tied in a knot to make a loop like a swing).  Students are never in the air without a mat and a hands on spotter!

Beginner Aerial | Circus (7-10 yrs) - Mondays and Wednesdays | 4:00 - 5:00 pm

This beginner aerial and circus arts class is for students that are just getting started in circus arts.  Aside from working in the air students learn more advanced, yet foundational acrobatics such as cartwheels and bridges.  Students also work on higher level prop manipulation and juggling with balls, clubs, and hoops.  The aerial skills your child will work on in this class include fabric (aka silks), trapeze, and corde lisse (aka rope).  Students learn how to climb as well as work above the trapeze bar learning to string moves together into sequences.

Teen Beginner Aerial (11-15 yrs) - Tuesdays | 6:00 - 7:00 pm

Students above the age of 10 have a greater amount of coordination and grip stamina so we focus more pre-dominantly on aerial skills for the entire hour of class.  (Individual ground skills such as juggling and handstand classes will be added next season!)  In Teen Beginner Aerial students learn trapeze, silks, and lyra (aerial hoop).  Each apparatus is focused on for 7 weeks out of the season so they will work continuously on one piece of equipment for a period of time yet still have the opportunity to learn the variety.  In the second semester of the season students will work with the instructor to develop an act for the student showcase in the spring!

Teen Intermediate Aerial (11-15 yrs) - Tuesdays | 7:00 - 8:00 pm

An intermediate aerial student has been working on aerial skills for some time, usually 2 seasons at least, and is able to climb and invert.  They can also safely and without assistance mount and dismount trapezes, silks, and lyras as well as perform 30 second sequences on each.  In Intermediate aerial students begin to learn skills above head height so it is important that they have the strength, stamina, and confidence to do so, all of which are skills developed in Teen Beginner Aerial.  Just as in beginner class, this class will also focus on trapeze, silks, and lyra.  Students will get to choose an apparatus of focus for the second semester of the season in order to develop a routine with the guidance of the instructor in order to present at the student showcase at the end of season.

Teen Aerial Dance Co.

THE SPACE's Teen Aerial Dance Company is directed by McKinley Vitale and is designed for budding teen performers with a strong interest in advancing their aerial skill.  Members of the company are expected to work hard with the intention of achieving professional growth.

The company has two shows a year: a showcase in the fall and an integrated full show in the spring.  The company practices twice a week Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30 - 8:30 pm and focuses on skill building, creativity, conditioning, and flexibility.  Students are able to choose their apparatus of focus, and will learn skills and choreography techniques on that apparatus.

Please email McKinley at McK@TheSpaceATL.com with any questions!
